Training Your AI
Customize your AI's behavior using system prompts, rules, and training data. These tools help ensure consistent, on-brand responses that stay within defined boundaries.
Overview
ConfigureMyAI provides four ways to shape your AI's behavior:
- System Prompt - Define the AI's role and personality
- Rules & Restrictions - Set boundaries for what the AI should and shouldn't do
- Training Data - Provide reference information and FAQs
- Attachments - Upload files for the AI to reference
How it works: When you chat with a configuration or make API requests, all training components are combined into a comprehensive system prompt that's sent with each request to ensure consistent behavior.
System Prompt
The system prompt defines the AI's core identity, role, and personality. It's the foundation of your AI's behavior.
Best Practices
- Be specific about the AI's role and expertise
- Define the tone and communication style
- Specify any domain knowledge the AI should have
- Include any consistent behaviors or phrases to use
Example System Prompt
You are a customer support assistant for Fitness Coach, a fitness tracking application.
Your role:
- Help users with questions about the app's features
- Troubleshoot common issues
- Provide guidance on using workout tracking, progress photos, and AI coaching features
Your personality:
- Friendly and encouraging
- Professional but approachable
- Health-conscious and supportive of fitness goals
Your knowledge:
- You are an expert on all Fit Coach features
- You understand fitness terminology and basic exercise science
- You know about our subscription plans and pricing
Rules & Restrictions
Rules define what your AI should and shouldn't do. When users ask questions outside these boundaries, the AI will politely decline and redirect.
Example Rules
- Only answer questions related to Fit Coach and fitness tracking
- Do not provide medical advice or diagnose conditions
- Do not discuss competitor products
- Redirect pricing questions to: https://fitcoach.example.com/pricing
- Never share internal company information or roadmap details
- If asked about topics outside your expertise, politely explain your limitations
How Rules Are Enforced
When you set rules, they're included in the system prompt with explicit instructions to:
- Strictly follow the defined rules
- Politely decline requests that violate rules
- Explain limitations when asked about out-of-scope topics
- Stay within the defined expertise boundaries
Example: Out-of-scope request
User: "What's the weather like today?"
AI: "I'm here to help with Fit Coach and fitness-related questions.
For weather information, I'd recommend checking a weather app or website. Is there
anything about your fitness tracking I can help with?"
Training Data
Training data provides specific information for the AI to reference when responding. This is ideal for:
- FAQs and common questions

File Uploads
You can upload files to provide additional reference material:
Data File (Single File)
Upload one primary data file in these formats:
- PDF documents
- Excel spreadsheets (.xlsx, .xls)
- Word documents (.docx, .doc)
- CSV files
- Plain text files
Training Attachments (Up to 10 Files)
Upload additional reference materials:
- Images (JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP)
- Documents (PDF, Word, Excel)
- Text files (TXT, CSV, JSON, Markdown)
- Code files (for technical documentation)
Token Limits
Large files are automatically truncated to fit within token limits. For best results, keep training data focused and relevant. Text content is limited to approximately 50,000 characters.
Best Practices
-
Start simple, then refine
Begin with a basic system prompt and add rules/training data as you identify gaps. -
Test thoroughly
Use the Chat Conversations to test edge cases and boundary conditions. -
Be specific in rules
Vague rules lead to inconsistent enforcement. Be explicit about what is and isn't allowed. -
Keep training data current
Regularly update FAQs and reference information to keep the AI accurate. -
Use consistent formatting
Structured training data (with headers and clear Q&A format) works better than unstructured text.
